In the three weeks since he’d moved back to the city, Robert had gotten into the habit of checking his spam folder, just in case any job-related emails ended up there by accident. One morning, sandwiched between a Viagra offer and an ad for lonely Russian singles, he found a message from someone named Vanessa Campbell.

Hi Robert,

I hope it’s okay for me to reach out—you gave me your card at Zuccotti Park last November. At the time I was organizing for Occupy Museums. I gave you a flyer and we chatted a little bit about our goals. Maybe you recall? Anyway, I’m still involved with OM, but lately I’ve also been working with a few different groups through the activist collective that I’m a part of, 21 Rector (we’re named after our street address haha). We’ve been doing some work with an organization called Abolish Debt. If you’re not familiar with it, what they do is buy delinquent debt—mostly medical, credit card, and student—from banks and other creditors for pennies on the dollar, but instead of collecting it, they abolish it.

We’ve been operating solely on the goodwill of donors, and we’re gearing up for a big fundraiser in early March, and I was wondering if you’d be interested in donating some of the artwork you made for Occupy Wall Street to our auction. Garrett showed me the mockups you sent him—I think the work is great and I’m sorry you didn’t get the chance to put it to its original use, but I do think it would be in high demand at auction, both as a collector’s item and as a symbol of a historic movement. And of course, we’d be thrilled to have you as a guest of honor at the fundraiser as well.
